Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Landscape Horticulturalist with architectural expertise to work closely with a private estate in Palm Beach, Florida. The principal of the estate is an avid gardener and is passionate about creating a beautiful, sustainable, and diverse landscape. The ideal candidate will have an in-depth understanding of the local flora, horticulture, and landscape design principles, along with the ability to work with architectural elements to seamlessly integrate the garden with the estate’s aesthetic.
Key Responsibilities:
- Landscape Design & Planning: Collaborate with the homeowner to design, plan, and implement customized landscape projects that complement the architectural style of the home. Develop layouts that integrate plant selections, hardscaping, and structural elements.
- Flora Selection & Maintenance: Utilize expertise in regional plant species to select appropriate flora for the local climate, ensuring long-term health and beauty. Provide recommendations for plant care and ensure proper maintenance of the garden to enhance its visual appeal.
- Garden & Lawn Maintenance: Oversee daily, weekly, and seasonal maintenance schedules for lawns, gardens, and ornamental plants. This includes pruning, weeding, irrigation management, and pest control.
- Sustainable Landscaping: Implement environmentally sustainable landscaping practices, focusing on water conservation, native plant species, soil health, and eco-friendly garden techniques.
- Plant Health & Disease Management: Monitor the health of plants, diagnosing and treating pest and disease issues using organic and environmentally responsible methods. Keep up to date with the latest horticultural research.
- Collaboration with Contractors & Vendors: Work alongside contractors, architects, and other vendors for landscaping projects, ensuring coordination between design, construction, and plant installation.
- Seasonal Planning & Rotations: Design seasonal planting plans to ensure the garden remains vibrant year-round, including selecting flowers, shrubs, and trees that bloom at different times.
- Garden Aesthetics & Architectural Integration: Ensure the garden complements the home’s architecture, integrating hardscape elements like pathways, water features, garden walls, and other structural components into the landscape.
- Garden Education & Consultation: Provide guidance and consultation to the principal, who is deeply involved in the gardening process. Offer advice on plant care, garden design, and innovative horticultural trends.
- Special Projects: Assist with any additional garden projects or design challenges that the principal may wish to explore, from vegetable gardens to private outdoor spaces, ensuring all align with the home’s aesthetic and functional needs.
Qualifications:
- A degree or certification in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in landscape design, horticulture, and working with private estates or residential gardens.
- In-depth knowledge of the local flora and climate in Palm Beach, with a particular focus on native plants and sustainable gardening practices.
- Experience with landscape architecture principles, including the integration of hardscaping elements such as patios, garden walls, and water features.
- Strong knowledge of irrigation systems, soil management, and pest control techniques.
- Ability to design and implement seasonal plans that provide year-round beauty.
- A passion for gardening and the ability to work collaboratively with an avid gardening principal.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Attention to detail, creativity, and a strong aesthetic sense in landscaping design.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with architects and contractors to create seamless landscape designs that integrate well with architectural structures.
- Advanced certifications or additional training in landscape design or sustainable gardening practices.
- Proficiency with landscape design software and planning tools.
