Position: Full-Time, Live-In Companion / Caregiver
Start Date: Early September 2026
Compensation: €60,000 Euro per year or $68,000 USD
Accommodation: Private bedroom and bathroom within a beautiful two-bedroom villa
Schedule: Full-time coverage with a minimum of one day off per week; the family may be able to accommodate two days off depending upon the candidate and coverage requirements
Benefits: Housing, food, utilities, internet, and work-related travel fully covered by the family. A medical stipend may also be considered.

A Wonderful Opportunity in the Algarve
A wonderful gentleman approaching 83 years of age, living in Vilamoura in the beautiful Algarve region of southern Portugal, is seeking an experienced and engaging Live-In Companion/Caregiver to provide long-term support.
Our client is wheelchair-dependent but remains high-functioning, engaging, intelligent, and very much enjoys good conversation and interaction. He is looking for someone who can become a trusted presence in his daily life—someone who will actively look out for his well-being, anticipate his needs, and take genuine ownership of both his personal care and the smooth day-to-day operation of his home.
The gentleman is of Dutch background and speaks Dutch, English, and Portuguese fluently. He has been fortunate to have the support of a wonderful Brazilian caregiver for more than 15 years. She has now made the decision to retire and return to Brazil, and the family is beginning the search for the right individual to continue providing the exceptional level of care and companionship he has enjoyed.
Responsibilities
The position combines personal assistance, senior care, companionship, driving, and household support. Responsibilities will include:
- Providing daily companionship and actively monitoring the gentleman's overall well-being
- Assisting with mobility and wheelchair transfers
- Supporting his daily routine while encouraging as much independence as possible
- Driving and accompanying him to medical appointments, social engagements, restaurants, and other activities
- Coordinating appointments and assisting with scheduling
- Personal shopping, grocery shopping, and errands
- Preparing fresh, healthy daily meals
- Maintaining household and personal inventories
- Ordering household and personal items as required
- Assisting with vehicle maintenance and coordinating servicing
- Ensuring medications, appointments, supplies, and daily necessities are appropriately organized
- Maintaining communication with family members as required
- Taking ownership of the home and ensuring his day-to-day environment remains safe, comfortable, organized, and enjoyable
- Coordinating outside services and vendors when necessary
- Providing thoughtful, proactive support rather than simply waiting to be asked
This is very much a companion-driven position. The family is looking for someone who genuinely enjoys spending time with an older gentleman, engaging in conversation, getting out of the house, and helping him continue to enjoy an active and fulfilling lifestyle.
The Home & Lifestyle
The gentleman lives in a beautiful, full-service golf community in Vilamoura with excellent restaurants, a wonderful swimming pool, and numerous amenities within the community and surrounding area.
The residence is a comfortable two-bedroom, two-bathroom villa. One bedroom and bathroom are adapted for the gentleman's accessibility needs, while the second bedroom and bathroom will provide private accommodation for the caregiver.
Housing is provided at no cost, and the family will cover food, internet, electricity, utilities, and work-related travel.
Ideal Candidate
The family is seeking a mature, intelligent, confident, and compassionate individual who understands that excellent caregiving involves far more than completing a list of tasks.
The successful candidate should be:
- Experienced in supporting seniors or individuals with mobility limitations
- Comfortable and physically capable of assisting with wheelchair transfers and mobility
- In excellent physical condition

Ideally trained in basic medical care or have related experience
- A confident and safe driver with a valid driver's license
- Comfortable preparing healthy daily meals
- Organized and capable of managing appointments, inventories, shopping, and household needs
- Proactive and able to anticipate what needs to be done
- Polite, mannerly, discreet, and respectful
- Intelligent, engaging, and a good conversationalist
- Patient and compassionate while respecting the gentleman's independence
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of the position
- Interested in developing a long-term professional relationship with the gentleman and his family
Prior professional experience caring for seniors is strongly preferred.
The family is open to candidates already residing in Portugal or elsewhere in Europe. They would also welcome Portuguese or European candidates currently living in the United States who may be interested in relocating back to Portugal.
The family hopes to have the successful candidate begin in early September 2026 and is currently beginning the interview and screening process.

Additional Requirements
- Must successfully pass a detailed background check
- Must provide a minimum of three excellent, verifiable professional references
- Must be willing to complete an unannounced drug screening as a condition of employment
- Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Must be legally eligible to work in Portugal or have the ability to obtain the appropriate authorization
- Must demonstrate the highest level of discretion, integrity, reliability, and professionalism given the personal and trusted nature of the position
