Chief Financial Officer (CFO) – Texas-Based, National Search

Our client is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join their family office based in Texas. Reporting directly to the founder—an accomplished and driven entrepreneur—this position requires managing and organizing services across business, nonprofit, philanthropic, and family activities. The family office operates with a long-term perspective, focusing on both financial growth and the development of human capability.

Position Overview:

As a key member of the leadership team, the CFO will work closely with the family and the Managing Partner of the family office. This individual will provide fiduciary oversight for a diverse portfolio of financial interests, and be responsible for:

  • Improving and overseeing core finance and accounting processes
  • Managing wealth, tax planning, and risk management
  • Supporting internal financial decision-making
  • Providing exceptional financial support to the family and its ventures

Additionally, the CFO will ensure the effective administration of trusts and offer insight and counsel to corporate trustees. A small financial planning and analysis team will report directly to the CFO.

Key Responsibilities:

Accounting & Cash Management

  • Enhance and implement financial systems, processes, tools, and internal controls
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial and management reporting
  • Oversee external audits and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards
  • Review month-end closing activities, including general ledger maintenance and reconciliations

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Manage the annual budget process for all family households and businesses
  • Collaborate with the family’s Investment Committee to develop portfolio strategies that optimize returns, tax outcomes, and financial objectives
  • Provide transparency to beneficiary members by managing cash flow decisions and advising on financial matters
  • Lead financial planning reports and forecasts at both consolidated and entity levels
  • Conduct financial analysis and due diligence on private equity and venture capital deals

Wealth Management, Tax Planning, Investment Strategy & Risk Management

  • Lead income and estate tax planning in partnership with accountants, tax advisors, and attorneys
  • Implement the family’s portfolio strategy, overseeing investment policies and asset allocation
  • Manage relationships with external advisors to ensure sound risk management and tax-efficient wealth transfer strategies
  • Ensure effective liquidity planning and cash management for family needs and portfolio requirements

Entity Standards & Oversight

  • Oversee financial planning and management across all entities, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and internal controls
  • Maintain robust internal controls to safeguard financial assets
  • Lead efforts to ensure audit compliance and regulatory review readiness
  • Manage financial reporting processes and ensure timely fund disbursements

Client Services

  • Provide client services such as tax preparation, risk management, and payroll administration
  • Support financial operations related to residential holdings and acquisitions
  • Plan and manage real estate holdings to support the family’s strategic goals

Qualifications:

Experience & Credentials

  • 10-15 years of experience in accounting, financial planning, compliance, or treasury, with at least 5 years advising or working for family-owned businesses
  • Experience with foundations, trusts, S-Corporations, Partnerships, LLCs, and Real Estate Partnerships
  • Bachelor’s degree required; CPA strongly preferred
  • Proven experience in team management and performance leadership

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong expertise in budgeting, fiscal management, and nonprofit financial principles
  • Ability to work across diverse legal entities and develop internal control systems
  • Proficient in ERP systems, financial software, and Microsoft Excel

Compensation & Benefits:
